The Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) is pleased to announce that Frans Tjallingii has been appointed as Chair by its Board of Directors, effective immediately.
Mr. Tjallingii has served on PRPA’s Board of Directors since his appointment was made in 2017 by the Minister of Transport in consultation with the Coast Tsimshian First Nations. He fills the role previously held by Bud Smith from 2012 to 2019. John Farrell has served as the Board’s Acting Chair since Mr. Smith’s departure in June 2019.
Mr. Tjallingii is an experienced business leader, advisor, entrepreneur and board member with 20 years of global leadership experience in the maritime, oil & gas and technology industries, including First Coin Capital, SAAM SMIT Canada and the Netherlands Government.
He has been a serial start-up enabler since 2014 and is passionate about making a positive impact in the world through the support of business and not-for-profit organizations. Mr. Tjallingii is the Co-founder & Chair of New Leaf Project which aims to find innovative solutions to homelessness. He holds an MSc in Marine Biology from the University of Groningen and an MBA from the Rotterdam School of Management.

The Prince Rupert Port Authority’s Board of Directors is comprised of seven people. Three of the Board members are appointed by each level of government – municipal, provincial and federal – while the balance is nominated by the Minister of Transport in consultation with the Port User Nominating Committee. Board members are appointed for a term of no more than three years with a maximum tenure of three terms.
