Annual event brings Canadian industry to Vancouver
The Shipping Federation of Canada hosted its annual Mariners’ Workshop in Vancouver this year (January 23/24) and saw strong attendance with representatives from across Canada. Welcoming remarks from Chad Allen and Michael Broad were followed by keynote remarks by Roger Girouard, Assistant Commissioner, Western Region, Canadian Coast Guard. Captain Philip McCarter, Associate Dean, BCIT’s Marine Campus, moderated the two-day event and did a splendid job of keeping speakers and proceedings on track. The primary focus of this year’s workshop was to look at the development of intelligent waterways and encouraged dialogue between mariners and regulators like Transport Canada, Canadian Hydrographic Services and Canadian Coast Guard. Watch for the April issue of BC Shipping News for a full recap on presentations, panel discussions and break-out sessions.
